Synoptic - After Effects Hologram

For part of our synoptic project I had to create a hologram for one of our scenes where the agent walks into his office with paper work and the hologram appears from the 3D model made and begins to talk to the agent.

Firstly we recorded the greenscreen and I imported it into adobe after effects. Here I used the key light but it produced stuff in the background and even with tweaking to the clip white and clip black, as well as adjusting the green but I still wasn't happy. I decided to do a mask which I then tracked so that nothing was cut off with little movements.

Here is some scan lines that I made by importing multiple solid objects and lowering the opacity of each one, I made some different colors from each other.

Next I added the scan lines into the hologram and they are random because I used the wiggle control and it makes it random. I then made it so it only effects the hologram from the inside instead of the outside

Next I added a wave warp effect which makes the holograms slowly flicker instead of being a still video. Next I added a fractal noise to a solid black color then made it go up and down the hologram randomly using the wiggle I used for the scan lines.

Next I added a small glitch effect which I downloaded and green screened. Then I duplicated it multiple times and put it at different points in the video, spread out along the timeline. This would give me different glitch effects in different parts of the hologram.

Next I gave my hologram a grey tint and added color vibrance to make that grey into a dark blue colour, I then changed the opacity a bit and pre composed it.

With this precomposed footage I could scale it down and import in on top of the render of the hologram base in the mac room made by Chloe. Next I put in a new layer and put a lens flare, I made this small so that it would only act as a hologram light not a flare for the whole scene, I removed some parts by masking the lens flare that I felt were unnatural to the scene.

I also used to mask tool too feather the bottom of the hologram so that it blends with the flare.

I put a different kind of lens flare for the hologram when it acts like its turning off to show a different effect than when its turning on. For the first scene when it turns on it fades into the white lens flare (105mm prime) but when turning off I made it fade out to the red flare (50-300mm zoom) which will slowly fade out.

To make the hologram appear in time with the lens flare I made sure to line it up on the timeline. I rendered a single frame of the hologram and the masked it out and slowly showed more of the hologram each frame as it slowly appears. Instead of making it go straight up I tilted the mask throughout to get less of a static shot. I also did this for the hologram fading out but I decided to make the legs disappear too because I thought it worked better with the other type of lens flare.

In conclusion I think this went pretty well and helped the group out as everyone was doing separate things so I helped with some of the vfx. I think that the hologram looks very good and I am quite confident now with after effects. If I had to improve I should of removed the posters in the background with Chloe ended up doing for me.
