Past, Present and Future of Gaming Platforms

Throughout the years consoles and video games have been developed. Each year as more consoles and more games come out they improve on past games and consoled with new features and interactivity each time.

Arcade

Video games and consoles started with Arcade. In 1971 Computer space was announced as the first commercial video arcade game, then in 1972 the first successful game commercially was Pong. In arcades you normally had to input coins to play on the big machines. In the late 1970's and early 80's such games came out such as "Space invaders" (1978) , "Pac-Man" (1980) and "Donkey Kong" (1981). These years have been called "The golden age of video games" after these years the arcade began to saturate as clones of already made games began to appear.

Console

The first home console was a wooden box with two controllers that was named "Brown box" there was only 6 games for the console which were very simple. Later on Atari made two consoles with their extremely popular game pong.

Nintendo

The "Game and watch" was Nintendo's first portable video game each with a pre-installed game. Another hand held from Nintendo was called the "Game boy" which had games you could buy separately meaning that you could have a wide range of games.

DS

The "DS" also known as dual screens was an upgrade on the game boy as they are both hand held with games you buy separately from the console. The DS introduced touch screen to hand held where many games too advantage of and made games based or heavily involving touch screen features. The DS also had a tiny mic where some games were required to use it in certain activities although it was very unresponsive. The game boy was an 8 bit hand held console while the DS was a big upgrade with a 32 bit dual screen. The DS was also backward compatible with games from the "Game boy advance" which was the successor to the gameboy. The Game boy is one of the most successful consoles selling over 118.69 million units sold. The DS outsold its predecessor with 154.02 million units sold and becoming one of the most sold consoles ever made. In the DS family next was the DSI which was like a DS but with more features and a camera. Then one of the most recent was the 3DS which has a switch with 3D features than no one used because of the stress on the eyes. Then came the 2DS where it was the same as the 3DS but without 3D and less portable as it couldn't be closed, this is one of the most pointless consoles by Nintendo and the only reason to get it would be poor choice in present or buying it because it is a bit cheaper than the 3DS. The original DS has 4 MB of ram which compared to the 3DS had 1 GB of internal flash memory and 128 MB of FCRAM with 2 GB of removable memory also known as an SD card.

Wii

The Wii was made in 2006 which had motion controls that involved the whole family. The Wii is one of the most popular consoles selling over 101.63 units. The Wii had many different controllers add-ons which enhanced the experience and gaming as we know today. The Wii used motion controls and sold well due to this new experience as well as marketing to the whole family with original and safe games with high emphasis on controls.

Mobile

in 1995 smart phones had a few numbers and a long antenna, these were called cell phones.

Then in 1997 these antennas disappeared.

In 2007 apple released there first Iphone which was the worlds first advanced touchscreen, here apps could run on the phone. These apps consisted of things like cameras, calender's, calculaters. The iphone also had internet meaning you could look at things online with a small device in your pocket.

In 2017 9 models later the iphone was on its 10th model being called iphone x. This compared to the iphone 1 has alot more inter activities than the predecessor but still in its core is very similar. Now with the iphone x you can use facial recognition to unlock your phone, with other phones you can also use your fingerprint. These phones have improved in space with the iphone 5 having 1gb of ram and can store 64 gigabites, with the iphone x having 3gb of ram.

Computers

computers let us access almost everything we want at a time, the internet and of course games. The most popular platform on computers is steam. Steam is a platform where you can buy almost any game and connect with freinds. Each game need certain requirements which I will list below:

CPU

CPU or central processing unit is one of the main parts of a pc, the more powerful this is the better games you can run, cpus work by processing the applications or games. Here it tries to process everything that is going on. Low cost and poorly made processors may not be able to run big , demanding games which will require you to upgrade.

GPU

GPU or graphics processing unit are used to process the graphics in a game, lower models may not  be able run games at high graphics. They render out the graphics in games.

RAM

RAM is temporary storage , its temporary meaning everything that loaded in will be there temporarily until you close the application.

Power supply

The power supply gives electrical power to every component in the pc to run everything.

Motherboard

The motherboard holds all the other computer components together.

Hard drive

The hard drive is a permanent storage for everything on the pc, when it is full nothing can be downloaded unless you get more space

Cooling

The cooling cools down the pc , giving it an airflow making sure the parts don't get too hot and malfunction

Input and output devices

Mouse

The mouse gives you assess to move around your screen and click on anything, there can also be multiple buttons on the mouse which can be set as different inputs

Keyboard

The basic keyboard allows the user to type from a-z and use symbols to navigate their way through their screen, each key acts as a different input for the computer. Keyboard along with mouse are both input devices and they help the user interact with their computer.

Monitor

A monitor shows everything that is going on in the screen and can be interacted with using keyboard and mouse, some monitors can be touchscreen. It is an output device as it shows the viewer what is happening.
