Current Software Technologies

There are a lot of different applications and software's which can be found online which help in creating games. These engines can be suited better for 2D or 3D but sometimes a software can use both effectively.

An example of a good software than can use 3D and 2D is unity. Unity is probably one of the most well know applications. Online there is many tutorials and assets to help developers with their games. In unity there is an asset store where you can search for assets instead of importing them yourself. In the asset store you can search for different price ranges with free being an option, and also 2D or 3D assets. This opens up the possibilities as you can import whatever you need even making it yourself with applications such as Blender and Maya. With unity you can use coding to make your own levels. Also something good with unity is the ability to test the game at any point, although this can be also bad since if there is an error you can't play test and these can be hard to find out sometimes. After the game is complete you can render in unity too.

An example of a application that used 2D effectively is GameMaker Studio 2 which costs $100 for the licence permanently although there is also a free trial. This software is like unity which I mentioned before but here there is only a 2D feature to make games. GameMaker Studio 2 is easier to use than most. Something useful that is similar to unity's asset store is a market place which offers add-ons to make your game. Some games that have been made with GameMaker Studio 2 is HyperLightDrifter which is a large detailed game that shows that an "easier" way to make games doesn't make them worse than any other.

For 3D a good software is Maya, this can be used to make models and assets in engines such as unity. This is good for making your own 3D game with the assets made yourself. You have many different tools to make modelling as easy and relaxing as possible. Here with the models you can add any texture aswell as using bump maps to make the model more detailed if needed and the textures more detailed too. Maya is more for making the assets and models for the games.
