Maya Car

Our task was to make a car on maya, we started this by making the blueprint on illustrator.

We then proceeded to make the side of the car, leaving out the top. Here are my first three attempts, the first one I tried making the whole car using the knife tool but it had the top and didnt have the topology i needed for the second one I made I messed up on the wheel arches making me unable to bridge , for my third attempt I fixed but didn't like how flat the wheel arches were.

On my new car I started with the pipe tool, from here I made the first wheel arch, I then did the other wheel arch. On my car these wheel arches were stuck out so using deformers I made it bend inwards and then dragged the verticies

After doing this I realized that to make the car dimensions as they should I need all views of the car. So I downloaded the different views and lined them up so that the car matched from all angles, along with looking at my original car for reference.

Next I made the car curve round, I did this by extruding out, and using verticies made it loop around. Next I removed the area so I could put the bumper at the bottom, I also put in the grill and pushed it in, finally I extruded the spikes in the grill out.

Next I did the same with the back adding in the bump at the back which is almost like a slot for a number plate that was non existent on my hotwheels car, next I cut a hole in the bottom so that my exhaust could fit there.

For my exhaust I made two pipes and sunk in the middle, the next I made a plane based on the bottom of my car, here I cut the plane so it had the outline of my car and began to do the inside details. I used the knife tool to cut into the plane and did a mix of extruding in and out different heights to make it less 2D. I made half and mirrored it along with my car to be symmetrical.

Next with I added in the detail on the bonnet. Here I added the smooth sunk in detail, I did this by adding two edge loops and moving the face to go inwards

Next I made the wheels, first I started with the tires which on my hotwheels car were very simple and flat but for the sake of detail I made the tires detailed using different cuts and the mirror tool.

I was very happy with the tire so then I moved on to the rim of the wheel.

For the rim of the car I made the center a decagon and extruded out the five lines to make the rest of the wheels and the did the pattern in each of them, finally I added another ring for the wheel.

Here I combined them together to make the final wheel.

Here is the top of my car, I made this with a cube and added edge loops and moved the vertices, finally I cut out space for windows.

Finally I added the windows and textured my car. I used Arnold to texture my car and gave it a grey texture like my hot wheels car, although I experimented alot the colours always ended up coming out less shiny and dull, I think this helps with the red on the wheels to stand out. I textured the grill and also the bottom of the car too.

And the wire frame views

In conclusion I like alot about my car but I do think that it could of gone better, the modelling doesn't look smooth enough so the textures will always come out messy and dull, I did like how I kept the model relatively low poly. I also think I could of improved the texture to make it less dull.
