Job roles

To get a job in the industry you should have different skills depending on the type of role you will fulfill on the job. Here are a list of some of the common jobs in the industry and some skills needed for each job
  • Designer
  • Artist
  • Programmer
  • Level Design
  • Sound Design
  • Beta Tester
Firstly a to become a designer you would need to have skills in using technology such as graphics tablets since thats how the media works today. Artists should have a general skill in art and should be able to use many programs such as Photoshop. Programmers should be fluent in at least one type of programming language, and preferably go into a job using that language. The level designer is like a director as they create the environments and puzzles of the game, this is like designer of the main basis of the game. They should have a wide imagination and be familiar with the engine of the game and the capabilities. The sound designer is responsible for all audio in the game, this is a very important role as it helps to understand the game, without sound games would be much more lackluster. The sound designer must be able to set up and use playback equipment and able to make the sound as uninterrupted and powerful as needed. Beta testers are needed to test the game just after it is finished to a point. Here they will test the game for any errors or glitches which are then patched. This gives the game its finishing touches before release and without this we would have a lot less quality in our games today.

For the career progression for a game designer you could start by making indie games as a small developer, here you could make a small fan base and advertise your projects on places like reddit and twitter. Here you can start to be noticed by small companies and join them to work your way up. You could also start as freelancer and work part time for small companies, here you could also get noticed by the big companies and work for them too.

S.W.O.T - Self employed

Strengths

One strength is that you are your own boss so you don't have to worry about being late although this will still affect you negatively you can work a lot more loose.
-       Another strength is I have skills in art and design and 3d modelling so I will most likely go to a path where these skills are used the most.

Weaknesses

-          A weakness is in my coding which I should try and improve it.
-          I should avoid different languages of coding other than the coding languages I am confident with and improve those.

Opportunities

-          I can spot new trends and advances in technology meaning I get a head start before other companies to capitalise on these new trends early.

Threats

-          One threat that I will face is consistence performance and dedication, there may be other issues but this shouldn’t be too much of a problem if I focus with little distraction.
-          My weaknesses wouldn’t really threaten my business as I won’t be specialising in the career path of high level coding.

S.W.O.T - Freelancing

Strengths

Freelancing is good because it isn't a commitment to long term meaning if different interests or skills change there isn't contracts blocking certain paths

Weaknesses

Freelancing can be bad because it doesn't give a sense of dedication meaning some days you will work and some days you won't.

Opportunities

opportunity to get a good pay for something I enjoy and it isn't a commitment.

Threats

Everyone else who takes this job is against me and I don't know how the competition thinks or works like.

S.W.O.T - Short term

Strengths

Short term is good because its not long and doesn't need full dedication.

Weaknesses

a weakness in short term is its short so you aren't there permanently so you will have to  look for another job after the end of your contract

Opportunities

An opportunity to short term is getting experience in a small space of time

Threats

The job is short term meaning that I won't have a permanent income and could be replaced if im not as good as the competition

S.W.O.T - Long term

Strengths

Long term is good because as long as you perform well you can expect a long term job which means guaranteed income

Weaknesses

A weakness in long term is all the contracts which means you are locked in this job and can't move on to new things

opportunites

A opportunity in long term can be getting experience and maybe even respect which means that other jobs could be given as you could work your way up

Threats

Being stuck into a contract means you can't change even if you dislike your job

Cyber security

Cyber security is designed to protect networks, computers, programs and data from being attacked or damaged sometimes corrupted.

The games industry is a key target for hackers as they can make a lot of money in a short space of time.

According to data from steam about 77,000 accounts are stolen each month. The hacks required for this have been sold for very low amounts of cash, so many people have resorted to this hacking making the internet more unsafe. Another example of a way steam was hacked is with hacked infected clones of programs such as team speak hacking into your steam account. There can also be fake versions of steam that you can accidentally download as your client if you don't pay enough attention which can also hack your device

In 2014 Sony pictures was hacked by people for North Korea because of a comedy about the assassination of their leader, they then found out about this and hacked Sony pictures.

Censorship

Different things are censored considering how much is allowed to be shown to the public , this is similar to age ratings as different ratings can increase the amount of content able to be shown , I wrote about the age ratings in more detail below. Different things that are censored can be things that small kids shouldn't see like extreme violence or sexual activities.

Child protection on the internet

To protect yourself on the internet nowadays almost everything has passwords, these normally consist of at least 8 letters with at least on capital and on lowercase and a number. This means guessing passwords is almost impossible. Some sites also ask for two factor verification which means confirmation of login with things such as email verification or phone verification. This will tell the user if they have logged on or if someone else has, sometimes telling the user the location and time of that the person logged on. Also parental guidance up to a certain stage to stop young, impressionable, kids to be the subject of commercialism where they will get dragged into aggressive marketing which could change their views on certain topics which could change their upbringing in negative ways. Cyber security is also put in place to protect everyone on the internet and how

Age ratings

Age ratings act as a barrier to stop certain ages experience things that they shouldn't at certain ages, although this system can be flawed in someway since not everyone matures at a set age meaning most of these are more of a moral decision. The ratings are different in different countries but in the UK there is a few. For these ages they can limit what you can do in public places such as a cinema.

U which means universal which is suitable for all ages and all kids should be fine to watch these. There should be no swearing or violence

Pg which stands for parental guidance, this is anything that kids the age of 8 shouldn't find scary, cartoon violence should be allowed but it is in a way a bit or a mature U

12 is for ages 12 and below, this can be the occasional swear word and violence but there is a limit with the variation available.

15 is the age where most is allowed but there is still mild censorship in certain places, violence is censored mildly but most swear words can slip by depending on situations.

18 is the age of an adult so everything is allowed
